ISIS Screen Research Motherlode
“In the future, video displays will be everywhere, permeating all of our environments, at home, at work, or in public spaces. What kinds of content would we want to see on these ubiquitous displays? We have begun to explore three different contexts in which these displays might be used, with a different application driving the displays in each context:”
- Joe McCarthy at Intel Research in Seattle.
Joe could be the new patron saint of ISIS screens. All of his research interests are exeedingly pertinent to ISIS. He’s done tons of work with public screens, personalization, management, etc.
Here are a bunch of really relevant papers relating to ISIS screens:
- Personalization and Collectivization at the Intersection of the Virtual and Physical Worlds
- Human Performance Enhancement. Unicast, Groupcast, Outcast: personal -> public displays.
- A similar paper with a chart showing what people wanted to show on their displays — useful for guiding content on ISIS screens.
- Promoting Awareness of Work Activities Through Peripheral Displays. People don’t know what others are doing in big organizations. Sound familiar? They use screens to address the problem. Sound familiar?
- On the Design of Personal & Communal Large Information Scale Appliances Daniel M. Russell, Rich Gossweiler. IBM Almaden Research Center (San Jose). Also an interesting look at how this system is actually used Large interactive public displays: Use patterns, support patterns, community patterns.
- What’s Happening: Opportunistic Displays for Promoting Community Awareness. Stasko, Zhao
- EventManager: Support for the Peripheral Awareness of Events. Mccarthy. The events are more specific than we’re looking at (ie “Bob arrives at work”) but it’s interesting. They also used
- Tell your local Provost about this one: Using Public Displays to Create Conversation Opportunities.
Conveniently for us, there was a workshop on Public, Community and Situated Displays. Here are some of the most relevant papers:
- review of those door-side displays in Wallenberg.
- Plasma Posters from FXPal. We gotta check this out.
- A little promo for the camera-based touchscreen plasma from SMART Technologies (Calgary :)
- An infrastructure to display any content on any display (Stanford).
Also interesting:
Microsoft Sideshow by JJ Cadiz. Nnote the interesting ways of analyzing usage of their system they show in their paper. We could use these
