Word of mouth
Advertising gets personal
In a new era of anti-advertising, ‘word of mouth’, deemed the oldest and most effective form of advertising could well make a big come back. Reinforcing the cult and underground status of cool brands, advertisers of youth products will create events, promoted with no advertising whatsoever but purely from friends inviting others. Subliminally […]
Plasma vs. LCD
NEC Whitepaper
on the merits of LCD over Plasma…also gives a good overview of the two technologies.
Our prototyping here at Stanford this week showed that a mix of 20″ screens and 40″ screens will likely provide the best solution. LCD is the way.
iCal Viewer
This application takes an iCal file and turns it into a screensaver where events march toward a “now” line based on their immediacy. A great model for ClusterVision…and perhaps for the screens themselves?
Text that tells two stories
As long as we have text on a display, we should make it do double-duty: this font changes color and shape based on the weather in a certain location–we could do similar things, though since all of our users are in the same place, they already know the weather…Color is also a good way to […]
Edward Tufte’s thoughts
Tufte is a most amazingly thoughtful information designer, writer and speaker. Here are a few links to Tufte’s discussion forum that relate to our events@stanford project. There are probably some more in there somewhere if someone wants to post them here.

Instant Messenger as a Study Aid
This article in the NYTimes talks about the new trend to implement wireless networks, and thus the communication programs they enable (IM, liveblogging, confab), in university classrooms and corporate conferences.
I for one have lamented the inability to have a private conversation in a larger meeting, and it is tough to physically design a space […]
InfoScreen
I guess Germans really love their info screens. Ive noticed in the main train station that around 30 people just sit on stairs and watch the equivalent of bloombergTV without sound. Anyway, heres another product thats in the munich subways, albeit with projectors, not screens. It also has ads, news, and other […]
Visit from Apple
Our friends from Apple were here this morning and we had a great time!
There’s a product out there for OS X Read it To Me that uses text to speech to convert unread items from an RSS feed into audio files in iTunes which are downloaded to the iPod.
This could be just what Jeff Wachtel wants: The ability to have Events At Stanford on his iPod. I […]
Fishing with Strawberries
Tim O’Reilly talking about “fishing with strawberries”–we started this project with a couple fairly selfish goals: to play with cool stuff and meet with cool people. It turns out that the things we discovered have real value to others in the Stanford community–bonus!
A good thing to remember as we try to implement things for “real […]
